This video production on Active Listening for the Building Healthy Parent-Child Relationship took over two days to be finalised. The process of finding the right video editing tools was tedious but enriching. I was able to learn the pros and cons of many different features utilized by the platforms. I had explored platforms such as VSDC, Canva, Power Director and Flex Clip.
The FlexClip was the final choice. This platform is user friendly; it carries a lot of built in themes and product readily available for use. The estimated time spent learning about FlexClip, becoming familiar with its features and completing the video was eight non-consecutive hours.
Non-linear editing (NLE) was the technique used to complete my video. This technique provides for any parts of the video to be uploaded and inserted in any order which is done with the use of a nonlinear video editing software (Computer hope, 2021). This allows you to work on any segment of the project at any time (MotionElements, 2023). The segments can be moved around, transitioned, texted and have other sounds added to enhance the output. At this point, the software will combine the pieces in a process known as ‘rendering’. This creates a video file. MotionElements (2023) also pointed out some advantages of the NLE technique which I was able to benefit from during the process of editing such as accessing frames at any time. I also had my original footage intact, while possessing the flexibility to edit at any time.
This video was an achievement. FlexClip afforded me features and elements that made it so. Features such as ‘split’ allowed me to cut anywhere on the video, even in the middle. The ‘trim’ gives the option to ‘crop’ around the edges of the video. These two features proved useful as there were some ‘ums’ and other visible mistakes that needed to be removed. The transition feature is awesome. It puts dynamics to the production as well as helps to remove the obvious cuts thus allowing seamless transitioning of frames. Background music also enhanced the production and brought life to the story as it unfolded. The ‘drag and drop’ feature of NLE, makes using this software intriguing. I was able to ‘drag and drop’ all elements and found a liking especially to dynamic texts and overlay. Adding dynamic texts allowed the video point to areas of interest, while the ‘overlay’ provides complementary colour and vibrancy that will appeal to the interests of participants.
Next Thought Studios (2023) posits that “the visual and auditory nature of videos appeals to a wide audience and allows each user to process information in a way that’s natural to them”. They also made mentioned of what studies have revealed, which is, “the use of short video clips allows for more efficient processing and memory recall”. As a result, it is undoubtable, therefore, that the success of this video is confirmed. It appeals to different learning styles and provides a sensory experience, through engagement, for increased knowledge retention.
